State Level Technical Institute

The Department of Processing and Food Engineering (DoPFE), Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana is the ‘State Level Technical Institute (SLTI)’ to facilitate PAIC in Capacity Building & Training Component of PMFME Scheme.

DoPFE is engaged in teaching, research and extension activities in the field of food processing viz. cereals, pulse, oilseeds, fruits & vegetables, honey, mushroom, milk, turmeric, spices and medicinal plants. The department also runs PG programmes – M.Tech and Ph.D in the field of Sugar Engineering & Agro Industrial Processing. It has over 17 experienced faculties.

DoPFE has a well-developed agro processing complex comprising of state-of-the-art paddy sheller, a wheat flour mill, an oil expelling unit, a spice processing unit etc. The department has also developed in-house prototype processing equipment viz. rotary screen grain pre-cleaner, vegetable washing machine, turmeric washing machine etc. DoPFE also provides training to farmers on Jaggery processing. Dr. Mahesh Kumar is Head of this department

Punjab Agricultural University is the world-renowned agricultural university, came into being in 1962. The University has played a key role in increasing food production in Punjab and ushering in an era of Green Revolution in India. It has also made a notable contribution in increasing livestock and poultry production in the state.  In 1995, it was adjudged as Best Agricultural University in India.
